Advice Column 1

Hey guys! This is the advice column, so this is the place where you can ask questions. Please ask as many as you want! No question will go unanswered. There are no such things as dumb questions, only dumb answers. I hope none of my answers will be dumb though.

Love you all!

    1. Hi Gabriella,

Good question! (I'm glad you don't swear XD)
Many people struggle to understand why Catholics aren't allowed to swear. Since there are a few definitions for swearing, I'll deal with them one at a time.

So first, swearing, as in using God's name in vain (saying "God" or "Jesus" or "Christ" etc. other than in prayer) is against the second commandment "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain". It is very dishonouring to God and offends him deeply. If you know what you are doing, then using Our Lord's name in vain is a mortal sin.

Then there is swearing as in taking an oath. This is allowed if you do it in court, but you shouldn't do it in other circumstances. (This is kinda another matter, so I won't go deeply into this.)

Last of all there is swearing, as in using crude language. Ephesians says: "But immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not be even named among you, as is fitting among the saints. Let there be no filthiness, nor silly talk, nor levity, which are not fitting; but instead let there be thanksgiving" (taken from the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition). This means that using bad words (I won't mention any XD) is offensive to God. It is not fitting for us, as Catholics, to use words with ugly meanings.

      Hope this helps!!
